  • 13.6 km long bypass around Chełm
  • Construction time: 36 months
  • Realisation as design & build project

The General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) has awarded the construction of the 13.6 km Chełm bypass road S12 east of Lublin near the border with Ukraine to STRABAG’s Polish subsidiary STRABAG Sp. z o.o. The construction work is expected to take around 36 months.

“In terms of output volume, Poland is our third strongest country after the core markets of Germany and Austria, and I am pleased that this successful path will continue in 2021 thanks to new contracts like this one,” explains Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

The bypass will be realised as a design-and-build project comprising two carriageways, each with two lanes, as well as four on- and off-ramps and 16 civil engineering structures, including bridges over the Uherka River and the Chełm–Włodawa railroad line, over a length of 13.6 km. The works also include the construction of a highway service station, local service roads as well as environmental protection and road safety facilities along the entire route.

220 km of express- and motorways under construction in Poland
At the beginning of April, STRABAG had also been contracted to build an 18.75 km section of the A2 motorway between Siedlce Zachód and Malinowiec. In total, the company is currently involved in the construction of 14 expressway and motorway sections in Poland with a total length of more than 220 km.
