4 TIPS FOR MAINTAINING THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF YOUR EXCAVATOR
In this article you will find some tips to properly maintain your excavator’s undercarriage, it is very important to save time and money on expensive repairs.
Tip N. ° 1: Always keep the undercarriage clean
It is critical after each working day, to be able to properly clean the chain of your excavator, for example, using pressure washing systems, this can be a good alternative.
Lack of cleaning functions can lead to premature wear on undercarriage components, especially in cold weather and hard rock surface.
One of the most obvious examples, in climates with low temperatures, is the freezing debris in the chains, to clean off the dirt we must rub the bolts, loosen the tracks and unblock the rollers, if we do not properly carry out this simple maintenance, we run the risk of speed up that wear and tear on our undercarriage.
In addition, an improper cleaning of our excavator’s chain can increase fuel consumption and even put the integrity of the construction personnel at risk and our own.
Tip n. ° 2: Check the undercarriage components daily
It is important to perform a full undercarriage inspection to spot excessive or uneven wear, as well as look for damaged or missing components. If the machine is used in difficult applications or other harsher weather conditions, the undercarriage may need to be inspected more often.
It is important to control and check for potential leakage that may exist, these leaks could be an indication of a cracked/failed seal in the machine, which would pose a possible risk to work with it.
Tip n. ° 3: Good practices means correct operation
Some jobs report more wear and tear than others for our machine, specifically for the tracks and undercarriage of excavators, so it is important to have good practices that help us to respect the degradation of the undercarriage and the machine in general.
Some tips that can help minimize track and undercarriage wear include:
- Make Wider Turns – Sharp turns can lead to accelerated wear and tear and increase the potential for detracking.
- Minimize working time on slopes – Constant operation on slopes or hills in the same direction can accelerate wear.
- Try to avoid asphalt or rocky roads as much as possible.
- Select the correct shoe width: Choose the appropriate track shoes width considering the weight of the machine and the application. For example, narrower excavator shingles are better suited for hard soils and rocky conditions because they have better soil penetration and grip. Wide shingles usually work well in soft ground conditions because they have more flotation with less pressure on the ground.
Tip n. ° 4: Proper track tensioning
The improper track tension of our machine can cause a greater wear to the track, so proper tension is vital. As a general rule, when working in soft and muddy ground conditions, it is recommended to run the tracks slightly looser.
