XCMG Equipment Operate at Full Throttle on Construction of Largest Hydropower Plant in Africa
A fleet of XCMG construction machinery equipment has been operating nonstop on the construction of Africa’s largest hydropower plant, the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Station (the “Station”) in Tanzania, for the past nine months. With an average operation per equipment unit exceeding 3,000 hours, XCMG’s high-quality products and reliable services have saved valuable construction time for the project.
With a total investment of over US$2.8 billion, the Station will have a total installed capacity of 2,115 megawatts and is expected to install nine 235-megawatt vertical Francis turbines. Upon completion, it will increase Tanzania’s current total installed hydropower capacity by 140 percent making it the dam with the largest installed capacity across the African continent.
These equipment include dozens of excavators, cranes, rollers and concrete spreaders.
“The complex geographical and climatic conditions of Tanzania have been very challenging for construction machinery and equipment’s adaptability and reliability. XCMG has customized and upgraded the fleet of equipment to deliver optimal performance,” said Hanson Liu, vice president of XCMG.
Among them, the XCA60E all-terrain crane is equipped with the world’s first large-load, single cross boom independent suspension technology. Left and right wheels can rotate independently to adapt to the road conditions autonomously, improving the cross-country performance by 47 percent and high-speed corning maneuverability performance by 15 percent to cope with poor working conditions including high temperatures and wet, soft soil.
“Tanzania has faced the issue of power outages for many years, and it has embarked on an ambitious drive to attract more FDI which requires the guarantee of efficient, reliable and quality power. Tanzania has especially committed to developing alternative energy sources, and the Station will provide sufficient electric power for Tanzania while minimizing the damage to the country’s water resources and environment,” said Mohmand , equipment manager.
Since 2017, XCMG has been China’s top construction machinery manufacturer in terms of export volume to Africa. Across the vast African land, XCMG equipment is widely seen in major construction projects, including but not limited to the construction projects of South Africa’s Port of Djibouti, Ethiopia’s highway, Kenya’s Nyayo National Stadium and more. For Kenya's Mombasa–Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway project, XCMG has exported 198 units of equipment to participate in the construction; and for a refinery project in West Africa, XCMG has exported nearly 2,000 units of equipment from more than 20 product categories with a total value amounting to US$200 million.
The more recent construction projects that XCMG has been supporting in Africa include:
- Tanzania, forest protection and renovation project in the south: XCMG XE370CA excavators have been optimized in terms of power, hydraulics and operation to adapt to the tropical rain forest climate.
- Sudan, road renovation project in Abu Hamad: XCMG ZL50GN loaders have been working continuously and error-free in the road renovation and construction project in north Sudan’s mining area.
- Sudan, gold mine in east Khartoum: XCMG XE215C excavators have been working nonstop for over 6,000 hours without any malfunctions under temperatures of nearly 50 degrees Celsius.
- Ethiopia, Dire Dawa Industrial Park (DDIP) project: XCMG LW300FN loaders are deployed in the special industrial park located in Ethiopia’s first special economic zone developed in accordance to international standards.
- Ethiopia, Huajian International Light Industrial City in Addis Ababa: a complete fleet of XCMG concrete machinery has been working day and night on the construction of the park.
- Ethiopia, Addis Ababa Bole International Airport terminal expansion: XCMG QY25K-II truck cranes have participated in the airport terminal expansion construction. Upon completion, the airport will be able to receive 25 million visitors by 2025.
As of now, XCMG has established and owns six subsidiaries in Africa and operates more than 30 spare parts centers, with over 30 initial distributors and a sales and service network has nearly full coverage of Sub-Saharan Africa, providing professional sales and after sales support, spare parts services as well as free technical and job training for local residents.
